From the recording Silver Bullet
There are monsters under my bed. But they are nothing compared to the monster in my head. The monster in my head tell me that my ideas are stupid and that things won’t work out. The monster in my head tells me that no matter how hard I try I will become my worst fears. This is the creature responsible for lighter fare like embarrassment, self-consciousness and the poor judgement of other people. This beast will stand between you and the things you’ve dreamt of your whole life. It’ll tell you that you don’t have what it takes.
Have you heard this voice in your head?
What do you do? We surely can’t allow this thing to have its way. It will destroy you and roll around in your ashes after it burnt you down. What’s it gonna take to defeat this amalgamation of poorly formed beliefs?
If the movies are to be trusted perhaps a stake, holy water, or a silver bullet may be in order. A straight shot between the eyes can vanquish this foe…and perhaps relieve them of the pain that made them that way.
A couple weeks ago, I sat down with my buddy Bear Campo and we watched a couple horror films from the 80’s. Silver Bullet, directed by Dan Attias and based on the story by Stephen King, is the 1985 film about a werewolf who terrorizes a small town and the teenage boy who stands up to him along with his crack team. What we learn in this film is that even when we feel powerless, we must fight on. And when we do, we realize it was just a feeling and that we were far more powerful than we knew.
The monster isn’t as strong as it pretends to be and it’s more scared than anything. When the creature starts in with its rhetoric just say, “Calm down. I got this.”
Lyrics
Came in the light of the day
Feeling sorta beat up and hung out to fry and thrown away
Snake in trees, the bastards laughin with glee
Mud on my clothes, useless with apologies
Deep down in my mind it occurs to me
A lot folks in in town running low on steam
Smashed up down by the tracks late last night
Secrets swept underneath a bed of dreams
A Nasty Trick of the trade
Got you right in time
Got in the way, save you from your suicide
Amazing grace, Singing out to the moon
Men of the cloth leading you to your tomb
Late Late Late in the night
It’s just you and me
And anybody else crazy nuf to believe
Hunkered down doing what we gotta do
A silver bullet is the only thing to us through
Pull back the hammer, its in my sights
A silver bullet can set things right
Squeeze the trigger, put it in flight
A silver bullet, a shot in the night
Lets get this monster out in the light
A silver bullet can set things right
A crack in the dak, a fire so bright
A silver bullet, a shot in the night
Courage lies in hidden places
It’s always darkest before the dawn
Around the corner awaits salvation
We gotta crawl when we can’t walk
